Every child deserves the opportunity to become a confident reader. Through horse-powered learning, meaningful relationships, and individualized support, we meet learners where they are and help them discover the joy and possibility that literacy can bring.

Program Structure

  • UP4Reading is delivered in 8-week learning sprints designed to help learners build confidence and literacy skills over time.

  • Sessions are one hour in length and typically occur once per week.

  • Learners may re-enroll in additional sprints as needed.

Learner-Centered Approach

  • Every learner develops at their own pace.

  • Sessions are tailored to each child's literacy goals, interests, and socio-emotional needs.

  • We focus on creating a safe, encouraging environment where learners can experience success and build confidence.

Horse-Powered Learning

  • Learners participate in literacy activities alongside our gentle horses.

  • No riding is involved.

  • Activities may include reading, storytelling, literacy games, comprehension exercises, and horse interactions.

Family Involvement

  • Parents and caregivers are valued partners in the learning process.

  • We provide updates, celebrate progress, and work together to support each learner's growth.

Cost

  • There is no cost to participate in UP4Reading.

  • One of our commitments to dismantling literacy inequities is removing financial barriers that may prevent children from accessing literacy support.

  • Thanks to community support, volunteers, and donors, families are able to participate free of charge.

Location & Safety

  • Programs take place at Unbridled Peace Farm in Appleton, Maine.

  • Closed-toe shoes are required.

  • Sessions may be adjusted due to weather or farm conditions.

  • Parents or guardians are expected to remain on-site during sessions.

A Note About 1:1 Tutoring Session Enrollment

  • All of our programs, including UP4Reading Tutoring, are intentionally small so we can provide meaningful, individualized support to each participant. For that reason, submitting an intake form does not automatically guarantee placement. If a program is full, we will gladly add you to our waiting list and reach out when space becomes available.

  • To ensure the best experience for everyone involved, Unbridled Peace carefully considers participant needs, program fit, safety considerations, and available resources when making enrollment and placement decisions.

What is Horse Powered Reading (HPR)?

Horse Powered Reading is a well-researched interventional program that aids students in their literacy journey. By integrating socio-emotional learning with traditional reading skills, HPR reduces anxiety and builds confidence. Horses act as safe "friends," offering unconditional love and mental support, which creates a nurturing environment for learning.

Sessions provide individualized support for young readers. Facilitated by a certified Horse Powered Reading (HPR) instructor, this learning opportunity is part of our Up 4 Reading series and offers a unique approach to literacy through the kind and compassionate presence of horses.

These sessions can be thoughtfully tailored to meet the needs of early childhood learners, elementary students, or those facing other literacy challenges, ensuring that every learner receives the support they need to thrive. We believe in fostering an inclusive environment where all learners are welcomed and encouraged to achieve their full potential through compassionate, personalized learning experiences.
